The name the Dragons was chosen in 1938, which was after the Klan’s heyday. Some say that the Dallas High School mascot doesn’t refer to the Dragons of the KKK. Remember that Oregon was the only state admitted to the union with a law banning Black people from living here, a law that was in place until 1926. The Klan first started chapters in Oregon in 1921 and within a few years claimed around 35,000 Oregonians as members. However, many believe that the Dallas Dragons is a reference to the title of Grand Dragon which is a high-level leader in the Ku Klux Klan. ![]() You might wonder what is wrong with a dragon? Certainly, the name isn’t as obviously racist as say, the former name of the NFL team from Washington, or the many high schools whose mascots evoke confederate “rebels”. Our long and ugly history of racism means that reminders of it are woven into our everyday lives, and one of these is the Dallas High School school mascot - the dragon.
